The money deducted from your pay which goes toward the Canada Pension Plan
is to cover a monthly pension after you turn age 65, however the plan also
offers a disability benefit payable before that time. You can apply for this
benefit if you suffer any injury or illness which prevents you from working,
whether it was a work accident, car accident, or any other type of injury or
illness.
To qualify for disability benefits under CPP, you must have paid into the
plan for the qualifying period (5 years out of the last 10 years), and you
must meet the test for severe and prolonged impairment. This means that you
must be incapable of performing any type of gainful employment, and that
your condition is not likely to improve in the future, based on the reports
from your treating medical doctors.
If you apply for CPP Benefits and are turned down, there is an appeals process
in place. At IWAC, our staff of experienced CPP specialists can assist you with
your appeal for these benefits should they be denied after you have applied,
both at the Review Tribunal level and at the level of the Pension Appeals Board.
